Film humor can come from some pretty strange places. The great “Raising Arizona” finds humor in stealing a toddler from a family who has “more than they can handle.”
Sometimes even Dane Cook makes us laugh.
So it’s refreshing to see director Tamara Jenkins’ “The Savages” wring humor out of the darkness between two siblings and their dying pappy.
My maiden DVD review for the terrific entertainment site Pop Matters explains how Jenkins makes this awful material funny, touching and ultimately uplifting. Besides, how can you pass up the chance to see both Laura Linney and Philip Seymour Hoffman – is there a better acting team around these days?
