This week’s DVD choices

August 19, 2008

No desire to revisit the 2000 Gore/Bush election? You might change your mind after seeing “Recount,” one of several intriguing flicks hitting DVD stores today.

Is it biased? As Marge would say, “oh, youbetcha” (sorry, just spent the weekend in the Twin Cities). But it’s a fun trip through still-fresh-in-your-memory lane all the same.

Keanu Reeves breaks some heads, and a few laws, in the mediocre action flick “Street Kings.” He’s certainly improving as an actor … and by the time he hits 60 he might catch up to his peers.

And “Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day” is a throwback romp that fails to ignite the same kind of laughs the great screwball comedies did so easily.

I really enjoyed “Miss Petigrew.”

I think Amy Adams is a great comedic actress and Francis McDormant is always outstanding.

McDormand can all but walk on water to these eyes — take this role, then consider her parts in “Raising Arizona” (a GREAT cameo role) and then, of course, her preggers “Fargo” cop. What range!

Amy Adams, I think, is just kicking off a fascinating career…

I am so glad this movie is coming out! While it does not have the same laughs as the classic screwball comedies, it was still very enjoyable for me when I saw it at the theater. The look and feel and storyline was engrossing and I hope we see more of these types made in the future.

Thanks for highlighting it (albeit lukewarmly)!
