My brother could get by just fine if his television only broadcast the YES Network (for Yankees telecasts) and ESPN.
But he broke free from those channel surfing parameters for “The Office,” the NBC sitcom inspired by the droll British comedy.
So why wasn’t I an “Office” devotee, too?
“The Office: Season 4″ box set straightened me out, as much as I’m loathe to admit when my brother is right. My box set review at Donne Tempo explains what the fuss is all about.

I love the show, some of the problems Carell’s character has, most self inflicted, I find more than uncomfortable to watch, it goes from being funny uncomfortable to sad uncomfortable.
From time to time they do stretch believablity too far and the stereotypical office characters, as the years have gone by have become, IMO, a little too sitcommy.
I know that feeling … the situations presented are so uncomfortable it’s hard to watch even though we’re not there. It’s a fine line, but for me the show doesn’t cross it often.
Perhaps when I get more episodes under my belt I’ll feel the sitcomy-ness start to wear on me.
I love Steve Carrell. I actually found some great Office shirts and stuff at PantherTees.com. They’re really cheap and if you enter the promo code pts10 you get an extra 10% off. Check it out!
Yes, some of the situation are uncomfortable ~ but that’s often because they hit a little too close to home. I left my last cubicle job almost four years ago and I never plan to go back to a cubicle. Michael Scott, on “The Office,” is a collection of several bosses I’ve had over the years and I think I’ve worked with each of the characters at one office or another. The point is, the stereotypes at “The Office” exist in every office – to some degree. That’s what makes the show so uncomfortably funny – we are all wondering who we are (or, in my case, were).
I truly hope I was Jim, but I’ll never really know. The only thing I do know is that I will never work in a cubicle again.
PS “Office Space” is one of the greatest comedies of all time. “Damn if feels good to be a gangsta.”
Funny how quickly “Office Space” left theaters, and how swiftly it became a cult classic …
Working in a newspaper office cubicle wasn’t nearly as bad as what you see in “The Office,” but working from home as I do now does have its benefits (like hearing my dog, Haley, snore a few feet away from 9-5)
I listen to my dog, Xena, bark at the UPS man (her archenemy), the neighbor’s dog, the occsional skate border, the mailman, the meter reader, the landscapers, etc.
Thanks for write up Lil Brother.
Show is a classic- from acting to writing.
Uncomfortability exists but NO ONE gets hurt (joke).
See … my Big Brother IS watching!
