WWTW’s DVD roundup – 9/9/08

Amy Poehler’s first meaty starring role leads the DVD release slate this week.

Baby Mama” wasn’t Poehler’s finest hour, but it’s still a solid comedy teaming her with fellow “SNL-er” Tina Fey. Poehler plays a trailer trash surrogate who’s carrying Fey’s baby. Mild hilarity ensues, but look for sharp cameos by Steve Martin and Romany Malco.

Chucky’s back, and he’s just as animated as ever in “Child’s Play: Chucky’s 20th Birthday Edition,” which features a plethora of new and antiquated extras. The movie site imdb.com says to expect a “Child’s Play” remake in 2010, but for now enjoy the birth of a fitfully scary horror franchise.

I plan to see it tonight; Ms. Poehler’s been long-overdue to be a front-line star…

Agreed. It’s not a classic, but it’s consistently amusing and should help prove she has some box office clout. Fine cameos, too – from both Steve Martin and Sigourney Weaver.

I’ve gotta dissent on this one. I gave it a 0.5! I was aghast that the film couldn’t find anything clever to do with the two funniest women on TV.

Wow, James …. no room for compromise here! I think Fey knows exactly how to find my funny bone …

Child’s Play is 20! wow i feel old. i saw it in theatres when it first came out. i was 12 and i enjoyed every minute of it. i will have to watch it again because i don’t think i have seen it all the way through since then. One title that you missed that i picked up this week was the Blu-ray version of ‘How the west was won’ it looks amazing in high def and on the second disc they recreate of the curve effect of the three strip Cinerama process and it actually looks pretty cool.
