The folks at the Special Olympics aren’t happy about Russell Brand’s use of the “R” word – retarded – during this past weekend’s VMA telecast.
Here’s what the group’s PR rep sent me this morning:
Russell Brand’s use of the word “retard” during the recent VMAs is just another example of why it is important that the consciousness of society be raised about this word. It is time we change the conversation and understand that the r-word is harmful. It is more important that celebrities, actors and others who have the attention of society realize their words and actions on screen are mimicked, mocked and repeated in classrooms, on playgrounds and in malls and can perpetuate negative and destructive stereotypes.
But so far there’s been little media outrage regarding the matter. I googled “Special Olympics Russell Brand” and no pertinent news stories popped up.
Brand’s comments also didn’t make it to the front page of r-word.org, a site run by the Special Olympics which details their disdain for the word’s usage.
Am checking back in with Special Olympics to find out if they’re planning any action against MTV or Brand.
UPDATE: Two-plus days later – no response from Special Olympics regarding my follow-up query.

I came to visit your site after a long period away — LOVE THE CHANGES! Looks great.
About Brand — I happened to see the VMAs for a few minutes while channel surfing. I could only take watching him a few minutes before I had to change the channel, as his insipid, hyper-speed chatter wore me down. I saw Christina Aguilera, who thankfully broke away from some of her usual melisma-mania, but then Brand came back out to blather on, and I was OUT.
JJ –thanks for the site love …
MTV is famous for bringing profoundly untalented people to the fore … remember Pauly Shore?
