‘I Served the King of England’ - Czech it out

I Served the King of England

Being a film critic means exposing yourself to films you might not ever see otherwise.

“I Served the King of England” immediately evokes thoughts of costume dramas, archaic social mores and, much worse, romance that boils down to a brush on the cheek or some other physically restrained moment. Feh.

The actual movie is nothing of the sort, and I wish it had a more evocative title.

The Czech film follows a diminutive waiter in pre-World War II Europe (Ivan Barney) who longs to climb all the up the social ladder. He figures if he observes the way rich people operate and soaks up every last ounce of information, it’s only a matter of time before he’ll join their elite ranks.

My Washington Times review details just how inspired, and entertaining, “England” truly is. If it reaches an art house theater near you, ignore the fussy title and check it out.
