‘Carol’ keeps critics at arm’s length

‘Carol’ keeps critics at arm’s length

September 23, 2008

David Zucker’s anti-left romp “An American Carol” might be the director’s best film since “Airplane!”

But movie critics won’t be allowed to see for themselves until opening day.

That’s traditionally the kiss of death for most movies. Studios regularly hold back movies they suspect will get a critical skewering. “Bangkok Dangerous” didn’t get screened for critics, and neither did the sophomoric comedy “College.”

It’s possible other forces are at play with “Carol.” Film critics lean almost uniformly left, and they won’t be pleased to see their beloved Michael Moore blasted for 90-plus minutes. The film mocks a Moore-type figure who seeks to extinguish the Fourth of July.

So we’ll all have to wait until Oct. 3 to check out “An American Carol.” I’ll be rooting for the film to leave me in stitches, but I’ll blast it with both barrels if it’s a stiff.

If Zucker delivers the goods even half as much as he did with The Naked Gun (his finest moment, IMHO), it will be the clear go-to comedy/multiplex choice the first weekend in October…

Agree … but we’ve seen plenty of cases where liberal ideology stops quality filmmaking in its tracks (Lions for Lambs, Rendition, etc). I hope it’s not the case for the right-leaning Zucker.
