It’s shaping up to be a banner year for horror movies. Two, count ‘em, two good ones in 2008 so far, and we’ve still got two and a half months to go.
Both “Rogue,” a crackerjack killer croc movie, and the newly released “Quarantine,” weren’t screened for critics. Either that’s the new mantra for studios producing horror films or studios simply don’t know the quality of their own product.
“Quarantine,” based on the highly regarded Spanish thriller “REC,” ” follows a perky television reporter (Jennifer Carpenter) filming a fluff piece on an L.A. fire department crew. She tags along with the squad when a call comes into the station, her intrepid camera man in tow.
The call in question is no ordinary emergency.
The fire fighters burst into an old apartment building and find a crazed woman who proceeds to chomp the neck of a cop already on the scene.
The woman isn’t the only apartment dweller who seems possessed.
Soon, others start attacking the rescue workers, while the reporter and camera man do their best to capture the insanity. Like “Cloverfield” and “The Blair Witch Project,” “Quarantine” is told entirely through a single video camera.
The movie stays as faithful to that concept as can be expected, forever rationalizing why the camera man keeps shooting despite the chaos. Part of the explanation involves a quarantine set up around the building. The Centers for Disease Control know something has been let loose inside, and they’re not about to let anyone out to spread the virus.
Unlike most modern horror stories, “Quarantine” delivers realistic characters who don’t fall into easily categorized templates.
Writer/director John Erick Dowdle clearly understands what makes a horror movie tick. He spends time developing relationships between the dwindling pack of heroes and establishing a suffocating sense of claustrophobia.
“Quarantine” is far from perfect. Carpenter’s character shrieks through the final 20 minutes of the film, and Dowdle stuffs in some final-act explanations which come off as both rushed and unnecessary.
Quibbles aside, “Quarantine” stands as a fiendishly simple tale sure to shock horror junkies by being better than 90 percent of its bloody predecessors.

Could it be that it’s better than the rest of the garbage outthere because it´s a shot by shot of a much effective and superior film? Why giving so much credit to this american cash-in? do yourself a favour an go find the original [REC], that one is the real deal!
cftoto 10.12.08 at 2:02 pm
Am dying to see “REC” - but at the same time Hollywood routinely copies good horror films from overseas and does a lousy job of it. So even though “Quarantine” is a recent remake, it deserves credit for delivering a well told, scary story.

I haven’t seen REC, but I thought Quarantine was a terrific flick. A lot of people complain about Carpenter’s hysterics at the end. We all would like to think we’d be more rational than that, but in reality I think there would be some who would just become completely unhinged. I think she did a great job in portraying just that.

I’m sorry but I agree & it makes me angry to know that many people (not that many as it debuted #2 with 14 million at the box office) goes to see this shitty ass picture not knowing it’s a remake of kick ass flick.
Once again, go find a way to see [REC] you’ll understand where I coming from and why I’m so defensive over the original.

That said, Chris, Quarantine was actually an entertaining flick, and I can’t imagine how “Rec” delivered something so artistically powerful that Quarantine so pales by its side, I mean, relax, it’s a simple genre horror flick, 10 strangers trapped together, and then …
Unless Hemmingway was some way involved, it’s just a horror flick. And Qtine delivered.
Besides, that other one was all in some kind of weird language that uses different words for everything.

I have seen REC and was upset when I heard they were remaking it, but I decided to see for myself how it compared and was very surprised that even though I knew most of what was going to happen, they had managed to up the tension even more….BUT, the last 10 minutes of REC are far more disturbing and scary than this version. During the finale of REC I had to put my hands up to my eyes because the visuals were more nightmarish. I’m puzzled by all negative reviews of Jennifer’s hysterics at the end, how do expect someone to react when the room is pitch black and you’ve been through all that trauma for 80 min?!

I appreciate your passion, Chris … I hoped you eventually check out “Quarantine” and can compare and contrast for us.

I’ll download Quarantine as I would not endorse Hollywood’s remaking machine by giving any money.
About that comment on “Besides, that other one was all in some kind of weird language that uses different words for everything.”, it’s called spanish my friend, but now I know why there’s an english version of [REC], people like you are either to dumb to learn another language or too lazy to try to read subtitles…
chase 10.13.08 at 6:06 am
lighten up dipwad, it was a joke, jeepers … take it outside.
cftoto 10.13.08 at 6:45 pm
Don’t make me separate you two!
And I don’t endorse illegally downloading films!
jic 10.14.08 at 4:26 am
Then don’t watch it at all. That way you’ve still ‘punished’ the studio by not giving them your money, but you haven’t wasted your time watching a movie you’re predisposed to hate, and you haven’t stolen anything.

Uh, yeah, Chris, you’re the one who’s not too bright… Chase was making a joke w/his comment about subtitles. I guess the humor was too subtle for you. You really fancy yourself a man of taste, don’t you?

Hey
I just saw the movie and liked it. Scary but also funny sometimes
Just one question for you guys: who exactly is the old lady at the end. where does she come from???
cftoto 10.19.08 at 6:11 am
Amanda - glad you liked it, but I’m not sure about the old lady you’re referring to. Do you mean the shadowy figure in the last scene? (not sure how much I wanna give away for those who haven’t seen it.
amanda 10.19.08 at 11:48 pm
yes that the one
cftoto 10.19.08 at 11:51 pm
OK, here’s my take:
SPOILER ALERT …
the person in that room was the nutjob who created the virus in the first place … he was a mutated freak who has continuing his experiments and eating whatever flesh he could find.
Just my .02 cents
