Dream of Dueling Palins deferred

Dream of Dueling Palins deferred

Who didn’t imagine Dueling Palins the second “Saturday Night Live” announced Gov. Sarah Palin would appear on the sketch show?

After all, Tina Fey of “Baby Mama” and “30 Rock” fame had hit the zeitgeist jackpot playing the vice presidential candidate. It made perfect sense that the real, and imagined, Palin would be electric on screen together.

Nothing doing.

Could it be that Fey has gone on record saying she won’t play Palin anymore if Sen. John McCain gets elected Nov. 4? Perhaps she couldn’t submerge her liberal politics long enough to do a Dueling Palins skit? Pretty classless if that’s the case.

Give credit to Alec Baldwin, who takes a backseat to few celebrities with his hatred for all things GOP.

He appeared on last night’s show and spoofed his own anti-Republican ravings for a few laughs. And the real Palin, appearing poised, confident and (hate to say it) gorgeous in her “SNL” debut, went right along with the gag.

Yet Fey steered clear of her. Nothing funny about a comedian putting politics above a good laugh.

“Later, Palin came on stage during the Weekend Update mock news segment and bobbed to the beat as cast member Amy Poehler performed a rap song the Alaska governor decided was too hardcore for her to perform personally.”
I’m sure that had nothing to do with personal politics though.

Saw that … not as mean-spirited as some of Fey’s past jibes.

Poehler remains a standout talent, and the bit was pretty funny. Wish they had given Palin more to do before, during or after it.

You want “mean-spirited”, try listening to “comedian” Shill Maher’s increasingly tired rants about SP on his HBO show if you can; admittedly not easy to do, seeing as that show is an hour(!)-long diatribe toward all things liberal (notice how Maher won’t EVER lay the blame for the shameful S&L crisis where it belongs, but he’ll drill on G.W. and Palin until the end of time), as evidenced by its stacked panel of Hollywood elite types…P.S. with all the talk about Ms. Fey, its about time Amy P. got due credit for being the best, most entertaining performer SNL’s produced since the late, great Phil Hartman…

Ken,

Dead on … lost in the partisan wrangling is just how fiercely talented Poehler is. She’s leaving the show for an NBC sitcom. I can’t imagine it will showcase her talents like SNL does each week.

And yeah, I’d have more respect for Maher if he occasionally slammed his fellow Lefties. That would be brave … and boy they serve up plenty of material, right?
