‘Pride and Glory’ – Guilty as charged

Edward Norton stars in Pride and Glory

Since the new Edward Norton flick “Pride and Glory” focuses on the NYPD, I decided to rattle off the film’s cinematic crimes rather than deliver a standard review.

Take ‘em away, boys.

  • Bad accents: Colin Farrell wasn’t born in The Bronx? You’d never know it after watching “P&G.” Why not just make Farrell’s character an immigrant and stop forcing him to hide his Irish brogue?
  • Oh, brother: Are we really supposed to believe Norton is the brother of Noah Emmerich? And that their father is Jon Voight? Can’t a Hollywood movie cast actors who look vaguely alike one another?

  • Unnecessary roughness: We don’t care if a film is running on empty – don’t stage a climactic fistfight just for the sake of busting up an Irish bar.
  • Waste of resources: Jon Voight keeps popping up in movies these days, and he survives “P&G” with dignity intact. Not only does he serve up a solid New Yawk accent, he even delivers a credible drunk one mid-film. Still, his appearance amounts to a waste of natural resources.
  • Recycling madness: We know Hollywood loves the green movement, but recycling every dirty cop cliche from the playbook doesn’t save a single tree.

(Photo: If you squint really hard Edward Norton (left) might look a tad like his on-screen brother, played by Noah Emmerich (right) in “Pride and Glory.”)

Well, I was afraid of that. My husband especially loves good cop movies and I was hoping this would be one for him to enjoy. Bummer.

It’s funny. I didn’t hate the film … and admired some parts of it. But it’s the kind of movie that keeps getting worse in your mind the more you think about it.

And how hard is it to get NY accents right? Geez.
