Halloween Sleepers – ‘Tourist Trap’

Halloween Sleepers – ‘Tourist Trap’

Any Halloween Sleepers list demands a guilty pleasure or two, so forgive me my “Tourist Trap” trespasses.

This 1979 thriller follows a pack of teens (already it’s breaking new ground, right?) who run into a weird old dude (Chuck Connors) who oversees a tourist stop.

You wouldn’t be caught dead at the old-timer’s museum, but these teens don’t have a choice in the matter.

One by one, the teens meet their maker courtesy of mannequins who come to life and scream their bloody heads off.

Any time a mannequin/clown/ventroliquist’s dummy comes to life I’m already scared.

I watched “Tourist Trap” endlessly as a youth, so it’s impossible for me to judge it critically at this point. And it’s hardly in the “Texas Chainsaw”/”Halloween” category of horror films. But it scores points for being rooted so strongly in the cheesy late ’70s/early ’80s era.

Plus, it’s got Tanya Roberts, a bona fide “Angel,” as one of the trapped teens.

I, myself, am not a horror movie buff. In fact, I actively dislike them and try to not watch the trailers or have anything to do with them. Sometimes, if the story appears intriguing, I will read a spoiler of it to see what the storyline was (and occasionally just reading the spoiler with keep me up at night). I guess I am the ultimate fraidy cat. My question for you is, what is the attraction to horror movies? Why do you like them? What is your favorite? Is there one you won’t watch, or wouldn’t due to subject matter? Do you watch them alone? Do they give you bad dreams? Do you read scary books also? I am very curious, because I just don’t understand it. I know several people who like these types of movies and would like to understand where they are coming from.

when i was in college i worked at a video store and my manager loved this movie and he could list all the films from the director who i had never heard of. I bought the dvd because it was cheap and he had turned me onto dario argento and the wonderful world of italian horror so i trusted his opinion. i liked the film and it had an interesting quality to it. reading this post makes me want to watch it again so i will have to break it out out it has been a few years since i have seen it.
