We all dream of retiring young … but at 34 years of age?
News just broke that two-time Oscar nominee Joaquin Phoenix is done with movies. The 34-year-old actor says his last movie will be “Two Lovers,” a film set for release next year.
Joaquin, I’m sorry what I wrote about “We Own the Night.” Please forgive me.
These kinds of announcements tend to be short lived, witness the countless “final tours” given by The Who, Cher and Tina Turner.
But Phoenix may be different because he’s so … different. He’s not your typical Hollywood type by any stretch. I interviewed him a few years ago for “Ladder 49.” He was prepping to play Johnny Cash at the time, but he wouldn’t say a syllable about the project. Odd.
Odd can be just fine. And it’s certainly peculiar for a successful actor to quit the biz in his 30s.
