Being an uncle should come with a warning sticker – ‘May have to watch lame movies with your pre-teen nieces and nephews.’
Had to set a good example for my niece over the weekend – which meant keeping my promise about taking her to see “Twilight.”
Yes, I had to watch it again.
The good news – it wasn’t nearly as painful as the first viewing.
Yes, the story remains as clunky as ever, and the awkward moments between Bella and Edward will make anyone north of 18 years of age cringe.
But the bond between the leads is palpable, and watching it through my niece’s eyes made me appreciate the power of young love, even when performed far below par. My niece also fleshed out the rest of the “Twilight” story, which gave a few of the scenes greater resonance.
And while co-star Robert Pattinson is forced into a number of convoluted line readings, he proves he’s more than just a pale, pretty face. Let’s throw him in a good movie and see what happens. (Update: Guess we’ll get that chance next year.)

Well, kudos to you for sitting through it again with your niece. It also takes a person of some character to admit there might be something likeable or worthy in what you don’t like.
BTW, how old is your niece? I am on the fence about it for my 10 year old daughter (only thematically, the action/suspense parts wouldn’t be a problem).
My niece is 13 … I found the movie, in toto, to be pretty safe for the young crowd. The romantic scenes are pretty chaste. Especially if he/she has seen a number of movies before. One of my nephews could watch a hard-R movie at this point and not blink. Not that that’s a great thing … it just is.
And I think watching movies twice can be pretty helpful … and eye opening. Looking forward to seeing “Wall*E” again soon …
