Breaking News: Wolverine to host The Academy Awards telecast

December 12, 2008

Hugh Jackman – People Magazine’s “Sexiest Man Alive” and the fellow who was – and will be Wolverine again next year – is your new Oscar host.

The folks behind the Oscars have given up on using comics to host the annual event, handing the reigns over to the affable Jackman, more showman than cutup.

The Aussie actor, currently starring in “Australia,” takes the ceremony in new and potentially intriguing directions. No high-pressure monologue. No chance of Billy Crystal reclaiming his signature gig. Jackman, 40, previously won an Emmy for hosting the 2004 Tony Awards, so he’s no stranger to the assignment.

It’s a bold choice — and a big risk. But better than marching another overwhelmed comic on stage and hoping for the best.

The 81st annual Academy Awards telecast will take place Feb. 22, 2009.
