Jason Voorhees … you never write, you never pick up the phone

friday the 13th remake

Hollywood remakes can tell us plenty about the current state of movie making.

Look no further than Keanu Reeves’ “The Day the Earth Stood Still.” You could write a thesis on how it differed from the original – in all the wrong ways.

I suspect the new “Friday the 13th” remake will be far kinder to today’s Hollywood.

Let’s face it. Does anyone really think the original “Friday” was anything but a slasher film starter kit?

And the new “13th” is helmed by Marcus Nispel, who did a fine job remaking “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” a few years back.

Yes, I know. Nothing could replace the original, raw and rude “Chainsaw,” but Nispel’s version wisely leaned on snazzy special effects – including Jessica Biel’s beguiling visage.

So bring on the new “Friday the 13th.” You’re not exactly messing with a classic.

I take it you didn’t like the original?
I rather liked it, one of the first of it’s kind. From the commercial I’ve seen they may have changed the story. In the first one Jason wasn’t the killer and if I remember correctly didn’t make an appearence until the last second of the film.
It’s been a number of years so I could be a little mistaken.

My memories of the original aren’t good … and knowing the fact that Jason became the slasher hero it wouldn’t surprise me that he becomes to killer right away in the new incarnation. How scary is it to have Jason’s ma doing the dirty work?

If they do make Jason the killer right away, and the commercial I saw had what looked like Jason going after someone then that would appear to be so.
Making a guess I’d say they would have his crazy mom egging him on. That wouldn’t make it all that different from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. A huge mindless psycho with equally psycho family.
In the first film, once again if my memory is correct, you didn’t know it was the mom until the end of the film. However I think a killer mom could be pretty scary.
If more people in this country didn’t have a problem with subtitles Asian horror movies,(the originals not the westernized remakes), would do great here. They are wayyyyy more original and scary.

i really like the original and it works in part due to the acting of the mother betsy palmer she is creepy yet looks like anyone’s mother/grandmother. the original actually borrows heavily from mario bava’s ‘Twitch of the Death Nerve’ i’m a fan of mindless slasher films but i will be the first to admit that the majority of them are mediocre at best.
