The debut of lil’ WWTW is mere days away … or sooner.
And while I dream of taking him to the new Yankee Stadium and doing other fun father/son stuff, I also can’t wait to show him some of the movies which had a profound impact on me as a boy.
And no, I don’t mean “Midnight Express.”
So here’s the most subjective list I can offer — the top five flicks I can’t wait to watch with my son.
- “March of the Wooden Soldiers” – It’s the film I cherish most from my childhood – Laurel and Hardy taking on the vile Barnaby and a boatload of fairy tale characters. But only in the original black and white version, not the dreary colorized one.
- “The Wizard of Oz” - He’ll have to know why all the kids at school are teasing him about his last name, right? Oh, and it’s about as magical as a movie can be.
- “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” – This one will have to wait for a while, but it’s the best teen rebellion flick of my youth. If he laughs along with his pappy I’ll know his sense of humor has fully arrived.
- “Mighty Joe Young”/”King Kong” - The originals, not the remakes. Both captivated me as a child. Can today’s children be won over by the crude effects and wondrous storytelling?
- “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” – Another childhood fave. Fun music. Flying cars. And Benny Hill in a supporting role. Lil’ WWTW won’t be ready to see Benny’s show for a while, though.
