The folks behind the new Tom Cruise movie “Valkyrie” want to give the movie away for free online.
Or at least the first six minutes.
The practice is hardly new … but I suspect you’ll be seeing more of it down the road. Just not sure why MGM decided to release the “Valkyrie” clips now since the film has been in theaters for weeks …
Allowing the film’s opening moments to be seen for free online is a pretty smart way to whet movie goers’ appetites. It feels like being included in an exclusive club – and if the first few minutes grab you, you’re more likely to plunk down your cash to see the rest.
So if you’re curious about Herr Cruise’s latest, give the beginning a try.

They tried that with “The Golden Compass”. The first 6 minutes were so off-putting that I didn’t even think about seeing it, or even renting the DVD. So it’s a two edged sword.
There’s the rub, K. You gotta be confident in your product. I saw the opening minutes of “An American Carol” and I said, ‘uh oh …’
I had to see it “Carol,” but if I wasn’t obligated professionally to check it out I might have waited until it hit DVD.
Okay, I’ve watched the first 6 minutes. “. . . torture and starvation of prisoners . . . ” yeah, that struck a cord.
I’m surprised that the Bush assassination porn aspect of this movie has been left out of the reviews for the most part. Is this in deference to Cruise’s production company holding it up until after the election? Interesting given that the Democrats are now calling for Bush’s head while the movie is in the theaters.
I will admit that the beginning in German was a good idea to pave the way for Cruise’s American accent. Not nearly as bad as the trailers.
