Batman beaten — by Oscar voters

Christian Bale is Batman in The Dark Knight

The Dark Knight” defeated The Joker, Two Face and the film competition in toto over the summer.

But the Caped Crusader couldn’t beat snooty Oscar voters.

Mark down 2009 as the tipping point for the Oscar ceremony. The one chance voters had to nominate a film embraced wholeheartedly by critics and the public alike — and they blew it.

“Knight” was left out of all major categories this morning in the justannounced Academy Award nominations.

Only the late Heath Ledger, who died this day last year, earned a nod of consequence – for Best Supporting Actor.

It all went down exactly as I feared, but who could have predicted the little seen, and not exactly beloved, “The Reader” would snare the fifth Best Picture slot.

Stunning.

The academy lost all credibility when they stiffed Hitchcock. It’s been all down hill from there.

Time to create a new organization for theater arts and give a new actually meaningful prize. The oscar is an union award, not an art award.

Not to sound like a broken record, but I’m amazed that the Academy, with its declining prestige and toilet bowl ratings, would pass up an obvious (and quite legitimate) opportunity to connect with mainstream audiences and honor a great, accessible film.

It seems like every year the selections become more esoteric. Seriously, “Frost/Nixon?” No one will care about that movie a week after the ceremony, much less ten years from now. It’s becoming increasingly difficult to justify my annual Oscar blowout.
