Jay and Silent Bob, retired?

Looks like we’ve seen the last of those iconic slackers, Jay and Silent Bob.

Director Kevin Smith, chatting up “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” to the Canadian press, said the characters’ time has come … and gone.

“I’m 38 now, I’ll be 39 in August. I cannot imagine spinning a backwards baseball cap and leaning against a convenience store wall. Those characters would just stop being cute – they’d become depressing, you know? Old, fat (guy) leaning outside a convenience store with another dude and they’re selling drugs to teenagers?

Smith, who shot to indie fame with “Clerks,” hinted he was done with the duo before. But when his more mature offering “Jersey Girl” tanked, he seemed to soften his stance for pragmatic reasons. And, sure enough, the pair stormed back in “Clerks II.”

I’ve enjoyed most of Smith’s films, though his non-Jay&SB offerings have left a lot to be desire. “Zach and Miri” felt like an especially lame attempt to mine Apatow territory.

Good call, James … definitely some Apatow overlap in “Zack,” but nobody does it better than Judd and co.
