The AMC Best Picture Showcase seems like a beating, especially this year. While I think of myself as a movie buff, this is the first year that I have seen none of the Best Picture nominees - and I don't plan on seeing any before the Oscars. It seems like this was a weak year for film, especially when comparing these nominees to "There Will Be Blood" and "No Country for Old Men." And considering that the two top reviewed mainstream films of the year - "The Dark Knight" and "WALL*E" - were left out of the category, it seems like the Oscar as an award and seal of approval is becoming less and less relevant. Good film making is good film making, and just because a film resonates with the rubes in Omaha shouldn't make it automatically suspect to AMPAS.

Christian, do you think the Oscars are anywhere close to reaching the "ah, whatever" attitude that most people have about the Grammys these days?

I've made a point of seeing all five Best Pic nominees for years, even though it has become increasingly hard to do so thanks to the Academy's tendency to only select lower-budget prestige films.

Fortunately, I just saw "The Reader" the other day and completed the process.

Ha! Great stuff, Tink. If they threw in "The Dark Knight" then the mix might be more palatable.

I think it is a good concept overall for movie buffs, but the thought of watching these specific movies back to back makes my teeth hurt and free popcorn is not enough of an incentive to change my mind. Maybe they could use it as a deterent program for juvenile offenders. Skip school or shoplift a bag of chips and your punishment will be a Saturday spent watching this dreck. Might work for white collar or more hardened criminals too. I think I would rather clean the oven - and nothing is worse than that!
