No, you won’t see Big Ben or Larry Fitzgerald jumping into your living room today courtesy of 3-D technology.
But you will see a trailer for the upcoming “Monsters vs. Aliens” in 3-D glory.
The film, coming our way March 27, gets a 3-D tease at the end of the second quarter of Super Bowl XLIII.
The animated movie features the voices of Reese Witherspoon, Hugh Laurie, Will Arnett, Seth Rogen and Paul Rudd, among others. The title pretty much sums up the plot, but here’s the trailer.
You can pick up free 3-D glasses SoBe Lifewater displays in grocery stores and other retail outlets.
The commercial could be a watershed for mainstream audiences who have yet to experience the modern look of 3-D motion pictures.
Popular Mechanics says the 3-D technology on display today isn’t the state of the state of the art, and that 3-D football broadcasts might not be too far off.
UPDATE: Well, what did you think of the 3-D experience on the boob tube?

TV’s been trying to push 3D since I was a kid … it NEVER works … didn’t this time either. And I have 3D glasses … yes, that’s weird, but I do.
3-D in theaters, today, works really well. At home … not so much. I only watched a few seconds of the aforementioned trailer, and it didn’t impress me at all (the 3-D part … the film looks like a hoot)
Were you watching in HD? I suspect 3-D might look better with higher definition.
I’ve got my glasses and we’ll see tonight with the 3-D episode of “Chuck.”
Mike,
I did watch in HD …. I had a similar problem watching the DVD of “Journey to the Center of the Earth” — I fear the 3-D experience at home can’t compare to the clarity of the theatrical version. That’s either good or bad for 3-D backers … but it could draw more folks to the theaters ultimately.
Yeah, I was watching in HD as well, 42 inch plasma, and nothing, it just looked badly colored, kind of reddish … but no real 3d effect.
Just watched “Chuck.” While the color was a bit muddy, I thought it looked surprisingly good and I saw a good (not great) 3-D effect.
Mike,
Thanks for checking back on this … will be really curious to see what happens next with the 3-D movement.
