Happy Valentine’s Day! I hate you

Happy Valentine’s Day! I hate you

February 10, 2009

Tomorrow, WWTW will post the top 5 romantic movie scenes in time for Valentine’s Day.

But it’s much more fun to discuss my favorite loveless movie, 1989’s “The War of the Roses.”

Danny DeVito’s second directorial effort was his best, and it’s a shame he didn’t enjoy a long, prosperous career behind the camera.

The Roses (Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner) are getting a divorce. And it’s getting ugly. Or, as DeVito’s character says about the looming divorce to his client:

“There is no winning! Only degrees of losing!”

“Roses” drew mixed reviews upon its release. Time has only increased its value, especially for anyone who thinks Valentine’s Day is a trumped-up event made for greeting card sales.

If that’s you, then get your “War” on, fast.

I saw WOTR in the theatres (I had to sneak in, I wasn’t old enough for the rating). And it’s still one of my favorite movies.

My favorite line is still “I don’t believe in mixed marriages. Dog people should not marry cat people.” or some such words to that effect.
