Top 5 overrated romantic films

Ah, sweet love. There’s nothing else quite like it, both on screen and off.

Except when the movie romance’s hype outweighs the reality.

So let’s celebrate Valentine’s Day by mocking five film romances which aren’t nearly as sweet and tender as they claim to be:

  • Sleepless in Seattle” (1991) – Sorry, I don’t buy people falling in love who have never met, and the presence of Rosie O’Donnell as the chirpy best pal only made matters worse. Feh.

  • Jerry Maguire” (1996) “You complete me.” “You had me at hello.” Gag.
  • Working Girl” (1988) “Cawfee, tea or me?” Leaden lines like that, and an overhyped Melanie Griffith performance made this a beast to endure. Special bitterness goes to the cutesy scene in which Harrison Ford has a big ol’ gob of mustard on his face for what feels like forever.
  • While You Were Sleeping” (1995) Creepy.
  • The English Patient” (1996) This lush story of a fajfaf;ljfa aaa ;f afa. Sorry, fell asleep on my keyboard just remembering this snoozer.

Hear, hear! May I add also any rom-com starring Hugh Grant? (Why is bumbling, eyelash-fluttering haplessness supposed to be a turn-on? Must be the British accent, I guess)

Best use of the gaggerriffic Jerry Maguire quote: the Joker’s version of it in “The Dark Knight.”

Nah, I think every Nora Ephron movie deserves some special mention on this list.

As awful as Hugh Grant movies can be, I’ve had to watch them on dates and such, and they weren’t as bad as “Bewitched” and such.

Agreed on the use of “You complete me” in TDK. That is funny, now that I think about it – hanging upside down, about to have been killed, and said quite exuberantly.

Yeah, there should be a special Unsufferable Nora Ephron List here … or somewhere at least

I rather like “Sleepless”…and Rosie O’Donnell didn’t b0ther me that much, although it has been some years since I last saw it, before she became really, overtly nutsy-coocoo…

…and she still bothers me less than whenever Ben Affleck stinks up the screen in the otherwise deftly-acted “Shakespeare in Love”…
