Sequels, remakes and reboots, oh my!
You’d think Hollywood would be eager to tap new story resources, but some topics remain verboten.
Obviously, anything to do with UN mismanagement on any scale won’t be touched, at least not directly. But why in the world haven’t we seen a major film involving the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan?
Clearly, the Taliban is a wretched outfit, a vile, dehumanizing force that even the leftiest of lefties would be hard pressed to defend (unlike Hamas). And while the Iraq War deeply divided the country, most sane folks understood the need to attack Afghanistan – more specifically the government which supported Al Qaeda rank and file.
Haven’t there been heroic acts committed by U.S. soldiers since the invasion began eight years ago?
What about Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy?
Heck, I’d settle for a film celebrating a multi-national force with a few token U.S. soldiers at this point.
Isn’t it worth a try to see if audiences will buy into a modern war movie? They’ve trotted out enough anti-war films, and just about every last one tanked.
Why not try this war on for size?
NOTE: If there is an Afghanistan war-themed movie in development or coming soon, please let me know.
UPDATE: A helpful reader – as well as Lt. Murphy’s father – checked in with WWTW to inform me about “Lone Survivor,” an upcoming film project about the lieutenant’s heroism to be directed by Peter Berg (“The Kingdom.”) That’s great news … Berg is a terrific director and “Kingdom” proved to be the rare case when Hollywood actually showed U.S. soldiers fighting terrorists. Please read Mr. Murphy’s comments below for more information … and thank you all for sharing this information.

As the father of Navy SEAL Lt. Michael P. Murphy, I should report that “Lone Survivor” the book by Marcus Luttrell, Michael’s teammate in his SEAL team, was picked up by Universal Studios and Peter Berg is writing (or has completed) the screenplay and will be directing the movie. Mr. Berg did “Hancock” and “The Kingdom.” We have spoken with and met him a few times and believe the movie will be out somtime in 2010 or 2011.
LONE SURVIVOR is about Murphy’s SEAL mission. Berg is a pretty good guy to be on it…but whether it indeed gets made remains to be seen.
