Another day, another news nugget regarding a proposed big-screen version of “The Green Hornet.”
But this one sounds intriguing.
Michel Gondry, the man who gave us “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” is in negotiations to direct “Hornet.” Hard to believe they’d let this info leak if “negotiations” didn’t mean “about to sign on the dotted line.”
Superhero flicks are huge right now, so it’s no wonder they’re trying t get this one greenlit.
Sorry.
But does “The Green Hornet” have a big following? He’s no Spider-Man, that’s for sure. But I wasn’t sure what a “Watchmen” was until the buzz machine kicked in big time in recent months.
“Hornet” will star Seth Rogen and Stephen Chow. At one point, Kevin Smith was slated to direct, but the “Clerks” auteur left the project.
“The Green Hornet” should hit theaters June 25, 2010.

Stephen Chow was also set to direct for a while, before deciding to stay with the project only as an actor.
As for whether the Green Hornet has a following, I don’t think it matters. With Rogen and Chow, it is clearly going for a comedy approach to the material. It is designed to bring in more of the Apatow-type audience than the comic book fans. Let’s just hope it can please both (which Chow showed was possible in “Shaolin Soccer” and “Kung Fu Hustle”).
And Rogen has been working out … or losing weight .. or something. Saw him recently and he didn’t look like the pudgy slacker.
Dunno why it’s taking so much effort to lift this project off the ground.
being a comic book fan i have never really had much interest in the green hornet aside from seeing a couple of episodes of the old bruce lee series i have had little exposure to the property. I think it will do okay it is not going to be huge and from what i’ve heard it will have some comedy but it is not going to be a straight comedy. I will reserve judgement until it comes out but it is hard to muster that much excitement for the film. The addition of Gondry as director is kinda interesting though.
I dunno, the last time a really offbeat director was entrusted with a superhero franchise, we got Ang Lee’s Hulk.
