Comment of the Week – 3/13/09

March 13, 2009

Everyone needs to spend some time visiting Geek Nation, which is what reader JonnyGoat did when the old “Star Wars” movies got re-released.

He recalls those experiences in connection to the Nation’s newest obsession, “Watchmen.”

I went to see all the newer Star Wars releases at the IMAX with many friends. I know this crowd well. The nerd/geek alert went off too many times to mention but the best is when MT pulled out his laptop and watched a bootleg of Episode II in Russian while waiting for Episode III to start. About 20 super geeks came over to his seat to discuss. I was quickly educated in the realm of downloading movies to ultra-sci-fi trivia. Plus the occasional, “Dude, where’d you get that lightsabre?” I’m anticipating mega-geekdom, or a geek civilization, to emerge on the steps when DC Universe comes out on film.

UPDATE: This just came in today from reader Outlaw13, and it’s too powerful not to include here. It’s a pointed rebuke to those in Hollywood whose work paints the American soldier in an unflattering, and unfair, light:

As a soldier getting ready for my third deployment to Iraq, I appreciate Mr. Sinise and all the other performers that have made time to come to Iraq and Afghanistan to entertain the troops.  They didn’t have to do it, and every soldier I know appreciates the effort anyone makes to show that they care.

To the people like Mr. DePalma who have made motion pictures like “Redacted”, congratulations on exercising your hard earned freedom of expression.  Exercising it on the backs of those you so cavalierly libel and slander.  Exercising it by indirectly encouraging those we fight on the battlefield by showing an America divided.  By making them believe that if they hold out for another day another week,  another month we will quit the field and they will win…because they view us as weak and you Mr. De Palma (and your ilk) are part of the reason for that.

The first amendment may guarantee your right to say whatever you would like, but it certainly doesn’t make what you say correct, worthy or necessary.

That last paragraph could be applied to much of what is on the radio, as well as on the screen.
