Love is in the air this week courtesy of Paul Rudd and Jason Segel. OK, “I Love You, Man” is about one fella’s search for a Best Man for his wedding – not “Brokeback Mountain: Home on the Range.” But Hollywood has been serving up bromances long before the hipster term was coined. So, in honor of “Love,” WWTW presents five flicks which can help guys bond with their best buds. Then you can watch “SportsCenter” and talk about your past sexual conquests.
- “Midnight Run” – It’s the boilerplate for odd couple action comedies. Charles Grodin at his peak … Robert De Niro long before he started phoning in every other performance.
- “48 Hrs.” – Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte alternatively bicker, slug each other and save the day. What could be a better bonding experience?
- “Armed & Dangerous” – John Candy and Eugene Levy play squabbling security guards in this mid-80s sleeper.
- “Rush Hour” - “Do you hear the words that are comin’ out of my mouth?”
- “Swingers” – “You’re so money you don’t even know it …” The classic male bonding movie. Period.

I like “Shanghi Noon.”
I think this one qualifies – they even take a bath together.
This is one of my all-time favorite comedies and favorite duos.
Of course, I love Jackie Chan.
Swingers was definitely the guy equivalent of a chick flick. I especially loved the scene where Jon Favreau’s character visits Vince Vaughn and finds him playing video games with the gang that menaced them in the previous scene.
I second “Swingers,” and even though IIRC, “48 hrs” was the modern precursor, the Lethal Weapon films are the sine qua non of what defines ‘bromance’ in film.

1. Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz: Pegg & Frost are hilarious together.
2. Wayne’s World: gotta love Wayne & Garth
3. Open Range: Costner and Duvall were a great pair, and you could almost feel that they had been riding together for years
4. Casablanca: Bogart and Rains played off each other beautifully
5. Pulp Fiction: Travolta and Jackson were an iconic pair of hitmen
Val Kilmer and Robert Downey, Jr. were a pretty awesome duo in “Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang,” as well. (Love, Love, Love that movie!)
And in “Top Gun,” you could hardly keep count of all the bromances everywhere.
P.S. I second the “Shanghai Noon,” Heidi. Awesomely fun movie. Might have to pop that one in for family movie night this week.
How could I forget Swingers???? Thanks for the reminder … it’s on the list now.
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang — a true sleeper.
