Just got back from the screening for “Knowing,” the new sci-fi thriller starring Nicolas Cage opening March 20.
“Knowing” is all about The Ending … the reason for everything shown during the first 100 minutes of the film. That’s not giving anything away. Audiences will understand that as soon as the film begins.
But some movie critics are giving up huge clues about The Ending. I’ve already read two reviews – that I refuse to link to – that reveal key elements of what makes “Knowing” tick.
I’ll post my review on Friday, and I’ll do everything in my power not to spill so much as a single bean. But some critics, perhaps realizing how hard it is to write a review for a film like “Knowing,” are including major spoilers in their critiques.
That’s either laziness or arrogance. Either way, it stinks.

How hard is it to write a review without spilling the beans? I remember my first writing about The Dark Knight was largely spoiler free, and I admit freely, I wanted to discuss a number of elements that would have spoiled the story. Any writer who through laziness or arrogance cannot take themselves out of the story and just write about the film’s merits loses all credibility with me.
I agree, Joe, but I see it all the time. I might keep a tally on the critics who give away too much with “Knowing.” Could be a small way to shame them into better behavior. Film critics are the audiences’ advocate, right?
Its already too much when the trailers give half a movie away. I just need a little tick mark. A slight tease or brief moment. Not five minutes. I’m currently boycotting all trailers for Star Trek after seeing two.
If the critics are giving away the ending, whether they meant to or not, no point in watching now. All I have to do is watch a trailer, read a thorough review and I got my Cliffs Notes entertainment.
