‘Twilight’ – The DVD extras

Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart star in Twilight

“Twilight” hit DVD shelves this weekend, the kind of event scribbled on the calenders of pre-teens the nation over.

But even those who greeted the film with a shrug will be intrigued by the crush of extras on the two-disc package.

Sure, you get the expected barrage of deleted scenes. But the sliced material is presented by director Catherine Hardwicke, giving the segments the kind of context too few DVD packages afford.

The scenes could easily have crept into the feature, save a brief makeout session with two naughty vampires. That, apparently, crossed the line for this teen-friendly franchise.

The Comic Con San Diego footage where “Twilight’s” cast and crew met the public plays out as vapidly as one fears. It’s still intriguing to see the film’s youthful cast get their first taste of stardom. The actors look alternately startled and delighted to embrace the screaming, screeching fans.

Hardwicke comes across like an overgrown teenager, so perhaps she was the perfect choice to direct the franchise starter.

The best material comes with a multi-part documentary on disc 2. Not only do we see the usual – “Twilight” author Stephanie Meyer beaming over her vision coming to the big screen – but the doc breaks down the effects, visual choices and other key elements of the film in a way any movie fan can enjoy.

The “Twilight” release doesn’t hold much back, which may mean we won’t see a new, extended DVD edition in the coming months. That’s the best news of all.
