Take that, Joaquin Phoenix!

Actors and directors alike rarely have an unkind word to say about each other.

Call it professional courtesy, buttocks smooching or just the camaraderie of working in an industry that feeds on feelings of inadequacy.

But, occasionally, a little honesty pokes through. The latest outburst comes courtesy of “Two Lovers” director James Gray. He wasn’t thrilled that his new film has earned less than $2 million so far despite a crush of positive reviews.

And he’s lashing out at its star, Joaquin “Beat Box” Phoenix.

Here’s Gray’s take on the film’s star, Joaquin Phoenix, and his infamous appearance on “The Late Show with David Letterman:”

” … but the only thing that’s out there now is a crazy person with a beard making a fool of himself.”

I feel Gray’s pain. He worked himself into a lather, no doubt, to make the very best movie he could. And it’s Phoenix’s job to promote it on various shows. So when the actor decides to make his Letterman appearance about himself and his mental breakdown, not the movie he’s supposed to be promoting, that hurts Gray directly.

Since Phoenix is currently retired, perhaps Gray feels free to alienate the Oscar nominee.
