Mos Def made a successful transition from hip hop artist to actor, to put it mildly.
He’s a fascinating presence in films like “The Woodsman” and “16 Blocks” – I’ll even forgive him for the wretched “Be Kind Rewind.”
But when he talks politics … wow. (hat tip Little Green Footballs)
He made the unfortunate decision to appear on “Real Time with Bill Maher” recently. He managed to unite Maher, Christopher Hitchens and Salmon Rushdie, no easy feat.
It’s a long clip, but it’s fascinating all the way to the end.

Mos Def – taking cognitive dissonance to unforeseen new levels. The scary part was the crowd.
He’s just bright enough to wrap himself in his stupidity.
That he is. He seems to be quite comfortable enveloped in it, as was Maher, who is willing to boot truthers as long as they aren’t celebrities. Pure chickenshit.
One thing nice about Hitchens, most conservative pundits would have let him flail about. He took him to the woodshed.
I wonder what Def thought about Rushdie’s fatwa. Too bad Maher didn’t think to ask the question. Hitchens would have had to break up the fight this time around.
Def hasn’t done the research himself on Rushdie’s fatwa, so he thinks the barrels of ink wasted to report on it is all nonsense.
Great point about Maher and the Truthers …
