Bright Lights, Big Remake

Bright Lights, Big Remake

April 1, 2009

Insert your own “Hollywood has officially run out of ideas” gag here.

MGM, the studio apparently gripped by remake fever, is poised to produce a new version of the Jay McInerney novel “Bright Lights, Big City.”

Josh Schwartz is signed on to write and direct.

Who’s Josh Schwartz? I didn’t know, either, but he’s the man who co-created and is executive producing “Gossip Girl.”

The 1988 version of “Bright Lights” starred Michael J. Fox as a young magazine editor from Kansas trying to survive in the Big Apple. Reviews were generally unkind and the film made little noise at the box office.

It’s not clear yet if the new movie will retain the 1980s setting.

Schwartz was also behind The O.C. and the only thing he has done that i have liked is the show ‘Chuck’ which he is an exec producer/writer on. i’ve never seen gossip girl though

Thanks for fleshing out his background, Ronn. I believe he’s also scripting a new “X Men” feature.

This project sounds like a bone thrown to the 20-something set. Which is a big reason why I bet they set it in modern times — better marketing potential that way.
