Movie fans don’t glean much about how films are made when actors and directors visit with Leno, Letterman or Ferguson.
Those appearances are all flash and gristle. No real meat.
So along comes MakingOf.com to let actors and directors talk about their craft without having to worry about pitching their latest movie. Oh, there are some folks here connected to upcoming projects, but it isn’t as in-your-face as a visit to Regis and Kelly often is.
The emphasis is on the craft.
So far, 40 writers, directors and screenwriters are featured in video snippets, with more content on the way.
The results? Mixed. Billy Bob Thornton spends too much time telling us he doesn’t really like movies before revealing how “Sling Blade” came to pass.
Natalie Portman, the site’s co-founder, is more engaging with her tales of craving to be an actress from an early age.

Sounds like fun, especially for this film fan with a habit of watching the documentary on the DVD before the movie.
Concur.
(so long as the subjects are able to communicate their craftmaking with intelligence – so many of them are near-inarticulate on the commentaries – and so long as the site does not descend into fluff a la Inside the Actor’s Studio)
