WWTW interview: FEARnet’s Diane Robina

FEARnet president Diane Robina admits she wasn’t thrilled to hear director J.T. Petty’s short film for her company’s web site, “Blood Red Earth,” would feature subtitles.

But she didn’t object

“We want to be a place where creatives can come and really do some great work,” says Robina, a self-confessed horror junkie, about Petty’s short.

Letting talented people deliver original content online, without restrictions, is part of her company’s guiding vision, she says.

“It’s really important in building a brand,” she says. “Horror is that type of genre, a fan genre. It has a hardcore community. To reach out to them, you want to be making originals.”

FEARnet.com has been doing just that, with original shorts by the likes of Petty (“Blood Red Earth” is a prequel to his smart horror film “The Burrowers”) and a multi-part prequel to the Alaskan vampire film “30 Days of Night.”

FEARnet.com also includes interview shorts with horror talent discussing the genre.

And there’s plenty to talk about lately, she says.

“The genre is extremely healthy,” she says, looking at upcoming horror films like “Drag Me to Hell,” “H2” and, yes, another “Saw” feature.

“If you don’t really know the genre, you say, ’it’s so gross,’” she says of the profitable “Saw” franchise. “It’s actually a pretty smart film series with all these puzzles you have to solve.”

“Horror gets a bad rap from people who don’t really know the genre,” she adds. “We want to give it validation.”
