“Barbarella” is dead.
So says Robert Rodriguez, the director behind the long-delayed remake of the camp ’60s classic.
Turns out the budget for the project, roughly $70 million, couldn’t be raised domestically. And Rodriguez, a father of five, didn’t want to shoot the movie overseas.
For any other director this would make sense. But Rodriguez is a different type of auteur.
He’s the guy who writes, directs, “chops” and writes the scores for most of his movies. And he usually does it for the fraction of the cost of a typical flick.
He documented the dawn of his niggardly ways with “Rebel Without a Crew.”
So why couldn’t he dial down the budget and shoot “Barbarella” stateside?

You can take this for what its worth but I had read that his insistence that Rose McGowan be cast as Barbarella was a deal breaker. And that without her, he was out. Any truth to that?
I’ve heard whispers to that effect as well .. hard to know the truth in matters of the heart, Hollywood style.
He has several other projects in the works, so I doubt he was as attached to this one as the others, such as the feature-length version of “Machete” (his mock trailer from “Grindhouse”) and “Sin City 2.” Plus, he is working on a reboot/sequel of the “Predator” franchise (though he confirmed he isn’t directing).
He’s also planning a new Red Sonja movie with McGowan in the lead, and he even designed some posters for it.
