How to review Seagal’s ‘Driven to Kill’

Steven Seagal stars in Driven to Kill

Film critic sees movie. Film critic scribbles notes (which critic often doesn’t heed). Film critic files review – or posts it, as it were.

So how do I tackle Steven Seagal’s “Driven to Kill,” out on DVD May 19?

Clearly, it’s not very good. But kicking a wobbly action film starring an aging action hero who clearly can’t pull of a fraction of his old moves seems … cruel.

Some critics revel in cruel. And WWTW doesn’t mind swatting down a big, bloated blockbuster with all the money in the world on the screen but nary an original thought in its head.

But “Kill” comes from more humble roots.

The direct-to-DVD affair stars Seagal as a former Russian mobster turned novelist dragged back into the killing game when his daughter is brutally attacked. Drop the pen. Pick up the gun. Or guns.

So suffice to say director Jeff King shouldn’t shoot Seagal in lingering closeups unless he tells the actor it’s OK for him to change his expression. Even a little.
