The road comedy “Fanboys” got pushed around the film schedule for months before finally getting its theatrical release earlier this year.
But the most notable aspect of the geek comedy isn’t its cavalcade of cameos – including Kevin Smith and The Shat himself, William Shatner.
It’s the one person missing from the production – Mr. Star Wars, George Lucas.
The film, coming out May19 on DVD, is a virtual love letter to all things “Star Wars.” And Lucas was kind enough to allow the filmmakers to use all those great “Star Wars” sound effects as well as some iconic costumes and props.
But the film really could have used ol’ George popping up in a cameo role.
Let’s face it. “Star Wars” fans are pretty angry with Lucas these days. They hate Jar Jar Binks, cringe over Lucas’ Anakin casting choices and think “The Phantom Menace” could use a heckuva lot more Force. And quality writing.
There’s even a documentary coming out next year dubbed “The People vs. George Lucas.”
Later this week WWTW will chat with “Fanboys” director Kyle Newman, and I’ll ask him if a Lucas cameo was ever discussed and if Lucas squashed such a plan.

Did you like the movie?
I’ve been meaning to see it – I think it’s playing at Lyric Cinema & Cafe in Fort Collins.
It’s really for die-hard “Star Wars” fans only. If that’s you, you’ll get some chuckles out of it.
I don’t describe myself as a “die-hard” fan, so I think I’ll skip this one! Maybe I’ll Netflix it.
the one thing i remember about the film before it came out was the plot for the film centered around a group of friends that had a friend dying of cancer so they break into skywalker Ranch so he can see the film before he dies. Honestly i could think of a lot better films to watch if i was about to die. but before it was released i heard that they changed the whole plot line about him having cancer i gues it was too depressing. Which version was actually released?
