This film critic never orders food from movie theater concession stands.
I couldn’t finish even the smallest popcorn container, not to mention I used to work at a video store where we made movie-style popcorn. It wasn’t pretty.
But 66 percent of movie goers will buy popcorn, peanuts or other theater snacks before settling into their seats according to Fitness Magazine.
The pub just released a report about movie theater snacks, and it’s enough to make you re-up at your local gym.
Want proof?
A large movie popcorn serving has 1,220 calories, and you’d have to swim for 162 minutes to burn that off.
An innocent looking soft preztel has 483 calories. And while a jumbo popcorn can often be only 75 cents more than the large variety, you’ll get 420 more calories for your troubles.
The June issue of Fitness Magazine hits newstands at the end of the month.

That is really scary. I never eat concessions at the movie theater. The snacks a supper expensive and I prefer to eat dinner before or after the movie. But I bet my burger and fries is not as bad as the large tub of popcorn with all that salt and extra squirts of that fake yellow butter they use.
Thanks for the information
Reason #2 not to buy movie popcorn: Your breath could tear down walls like Godzilla takes out Osaka or The Hulk smashes humvees. I believe this to be the worst aroma in the theater. I’m not a fan sitting near folks who eat “the corn”.
I’m curious to know what folks sneak in theaters to snack on. When I went to see Star Wars Episode II I heard almost an entire row of dudes crack open beer behind me.
Is nothing sacred? Can’t they just leave some things alone? What’s next? Girl Scout Cookies? Oh, wait.
Although, I guess it is good information to have if you go to the movies a lot (paging Mr. WWTW), but since I go every other month – at the most – I am not worried. It is the cost that staggers me. Me and hubby took the two kids to the movies last month and it was $70!!! I think we’ll be doing that about once a year. Maybe.
$70 …. wow. See if your town has an Entertainment Book …. they often have coupons (2-3 dollars off) for major movie chain tickets.
And yeah, I believe in eating lousy food in moderation. But it’s helpful to know precisely how bad the food in question really is.
We always go to the first show on Sunday.. avg ticket price 6 bucks. That’s how we saw Star Trek this weekend. Most fun I’ve had at the show in a long time by the way.. just a great ride. The AMC chain allows you to bring your own food and drink in, we don’t have to spend a penny on concessions.
According to a calorie website, air popped popcorn is 31 calories/cup. A large theater popcorn, then I would estimate at about 310. Of course 100 grams of “butter” flavoring would boost it to 1300, which is likely where your source got the number from.
