WWTW Interview: ‘Fanboys’ director Kyle Newman – Part II

How big a “Star Wars” fan is director Kyle Newman (“Fanboys”)? So big he swears allegiance to the most maligned film in the franchise – “The Phantom Menace.”

“George [Lucas] stayed true to the vision for all six films. It’s a singular storyline. If you watch them all together there’s something very special about it,” Newman says, adding the film‘s effects hold up remarkably well 10 years later.

The same can be said for “Star Wars,” a franchise which remains an emotional touchstone for generations of movie fans.

“It’s a zeitgeist thing,” he says of the six science fiction films. “It’s a hybrid of all these different influences – samurai films, westerns, swashbucklers. It had everything in it, but presented in a way that was fresh and dynamic.”

The films also gave young viewers their first taste of good versus evil, as well as something you won’t find in many kiddie films.

“It has a very spiritual message at its core,  a universal message. There’s something applicable about the Force for any religious belief,” he says.

“It’s a hybrid of all these different influences – samurai films, westerns, swashbucklers. . . .

He forgot the marketing department. Next time ask him about the Ewoks. When the Teddy bears walked on stage, my Lucas fanboy days were ovah!
