Some actors maintain their careers through the decades. They’re the lucky – and rare – ones in a grueling business built on looks, star power and the luck of the draw.
And then there’s John Savage.
The actor starred in some of the most memorable films of the late ’70s, early ’80s and then … poof.
What happened to the fine actor from “The Deer Hunter,” “The Onion Field,” “Salvador” and my personal favorite, “Hair?”
He didn’t really vanish. He simply stopped starring in A-list projects.
Today, he might be one of the hardest working actors in the business. He’s lined up to appear in a staggering 15 films this year alone, according to imdb.com.
Here’s hoping Savage keeps up that pace, and that he occasionally finds a role which will re-introduce him to his old audience.

I like John Savage in Hair too. It is a very under appreciated movie. Love the incredible choreography by Twila Tharp.
“Inside Moves” was my favorite of his movies. A fine actor.
I’m not a fan of movie musicals in general, but “Hair” remains one of my all-time favorite movies.
I need to check out “Inside Moves,” Nell. That’s one that slipped by me, I’m ashamed to say.
I’m a fan of his, too. For the most part, he’s managed to stay pretty busy in mainstream projects, it’s just that he’s been flying below the radar. I was hoping that his role as the villain in the TV show Dark Angel would bring him a comeback, but alas it was not to be.
I just saw The Deer Hunter again for the second time. I was 25 when I originally went to see it. John Savage is absolutely incredible in the movie. He should have been nominated for Best Supporting Actor in addition to Chris Walken. They both are amazing actors.
