And the best animated flick is …

toy-story

And a “Toy” shall lead them.

Pixar’s breakout hit “Toy Story” nabbed the top spot in Moviefone’s latest roundup – timed to the release of Pixar’s new feature,”Up.”

The list, compiled by the site’s editors, hailed the 1995 film “as perfect an animated entertainment, and parable about friendship, as one could ever hope for. And it still is.”

The site’s top 5?

  1. “Toy Story”
  2. “The Lion King”
  3. “Shrek”
  4. “The Incredibles”
  5. “Bambi”

Solid list. “The Incredibles” should be up a slot or two, and I don’t think “Shrek” will age as gracefully as “Bambi” or other Disney classics.

Plus “Toy Story 2″  is nowhere to be found even though it’s just about as compelling as the original.

(Photo: Woody (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) pal around in “Toy Story,” a landmark in film animation and a darn fine tale to boot.)

Fricken Bambi??

That movie gave me nightmares when I was a child and is the Meat is Murder crowd’s version of “Battleship Potemkin”.

Finding Nemo should replace Bambi or Shrek… My kids HATED Bambi and I have to admit — I found it boring too. And where’s Fantasia?

Funny story – my former boss has a liberal step daughter, who in turn married a liberal guy. They banned toy guns, video games, you name it, from their household. Their four-year-old son however has too much boy in him to hold back. The family brought out “Bambi” to watch when it came out on DVD, and the four-year-old piled pillows on the floor and grabbed an old broomstick.

Ten minutes in, you can hear “pow, pow, pow.” Apparently the four-year-old was hunting dear.

No more broomsticks for that young man …

Sounds like it would make a good scene on “The Goode Family.”

Fantasia would be on my list as well. Akria is another one I would consider as well.

No kidding on Toy Story 2, which I also seem to always forget when citing decent sequels. Throwing a nod Lilo and Stitch’s way, too. Not only does it rightly honor the King, but proves Disney’s 2-D division can still produce a great movie. Seven years ago, but it is great…

JohnFNWayne,

I once heard about just such a couple who gave their daughter toy trucks. She named them and and put them to bed.

“The Incredibles” definitely needs to move up, and although the animation was a little sub-par, I’m a big fan of “Allegro non Tropo.” A more adult themed “Fantasia.” I would also not choose “Bambi” for the top 5. “Sleeping Beauty” and “Snow White” are superior films. I’d even put “Pinochio” ahead of “Bambi.” It’s got a unique vibe to it. I’ve not seen “Toy Story 2″ but many folks have told me it’s as good, or better, than the original.

How could I forget Jungle Book? Definitely my favorite songs of any Disney. Good times. Good times.

I don’t know why The Incredibles are so high? Wall-e is far better than The Incredibles, and Finding Nemo, which I also find better, is not among the best five. How comes that?

What about The Nightmare Before Christmas? It was the first animated movie to be animaed using Stop Motion. It is also the only animated feature to be nominated for an Oscar in Visual Effects. (No shame in losing to the biggest movie of all time at the time, Jurassic Park ,then. Jurassic Park came out 5 years before Titanic.)
