When $1.4 million is big bucks

When $1.4 million is big bucks

June 2, 2009

‘The Brothers Bloom” has yet to crack the Top 10 box office chart. But it must be considered a hit all the same.

The indie con caper, directed by the savvy Rian Johnson, came in 11th place over the weekend, bringing its total haul to $1.4 million during its first two weeks of release.

That’s about as much as “Up” made in the time it took to load this web site. I exaggerate, but only to reinforce a point.

Many indie films rarely crack the $1 million mark during their entire theatrical release, so the film’s box office take is impressive. Plus, it opened at the peak of the summer movie season on just 148 screens.

Every summer has at least one indie hit, a surprise film that manages to stay alive despite the thunderous competition. Let’s see if “Bloom” can hang in there a few more weeks to officially capture that unofficial title.

Who knows – the film could someday break the $2 million mark ,,,

I’m looking forward to seeing this, I love a smart heist film and I’m hoping this lives up to my expectations. Also Christian, I caught you on radio free threedonia and Miller’s show. Good stuff on both.

The film has some trouble spots but the pluses far outweigh the minuses … and thanks for the feedback. Should be on Miller’s show again later this week.

I’m one of about six people nationwide that liked “Brick,” so I’m looking forward to this one. Rachel Weisz is endlessly watchable. Except in “The Runaway Jury,” that blew.

Weisz is quietly beautiful, isn’t she? And a darn fine actress. I really wish they’d cast her as a Bond Girl … give Craig a run for his money.

I remember first seeing her in “The Mummy.” I was 14-years-old and she didn’t look ultra-hot, but I remember thinking “wow, there’s a screen presence, I WANT to look at this woman.” Guess I was right. Unforutnately, beer has reduced my once keen instincts down to a pathetic knub.
