It’s hard to watch the trailer for Martin Scorsese’s new film “Shutter Island” and not come to the conclusion that arguably the best director of our time just made a horror movie.
Heaven knows A-list directors avoid the horror genre, but apparently Scorsese swallowed hard and decided to give horror fans a real treat.
Let’s hope it’s better than “Drag Me to Hell,” Sam Raimi’s attempt to reclaim his horror bona fides.

It’s unfortunate that this is another trailer that gives away so much of the story, especially since plot twists played a big role in Lehane’s book.
Is this really Scorsese’s first attempt at this genre? What about his Cape Fear remake?
This is a gripping book that keeps you guessing until the end that, well, ends like other Lehane books (won’t leave you feeling warm and fuzzy). At least we know Scorsese won’t sugarcoat it. I hope the trailers and reviewers don’t give it away.
i just read the book and i wouldn’t call this a horror film more of a ‘Thriller’ the trailer is a little decieving. i’m very excited about the movie though most of Lehane’s adaptations have been good thus far.
I would lable “Cape Fear” a thriller, though I bet you could cut that film’s trailer to play up horror-style imagery.
This trailer really does just that … wonder if the finished product will be equally horrific. One can hope …
I’m really looking forward to this flick. I hope that since Martin is a little new to the horror genre that he doesn’t resort to jump scares to give the viewers goose bumps.
It’s funny but after seeing the trailer I was reminded of your recent post about why don’t more big time directors try their hand at horror.
I’ll probably see this, and I’m no DiCaprio hater. I thought he was very good in “The Aviator” and excellent in “The Departed”, but when he shows up for the first time in a trench coat, I can’t help but think he looks like a ten year old boy playing dress up.
I hope Scorsese nixes his plans to have him play Teddy Roosevelt and Frank Sinatra.
