Things look pretty grim these days for Eddie Murphy, movie star.
The “Saturday Night Live” standout once ruled Hollywood, but now his films can’t even crack $10 million on opening weekend.
Both “Meet Dave” and last weekend’s “Imagine That” scored less than $6 million during their weekend debuts.
It could be the best thing to ever happen to the 48-year-old funnyman.
Murphy remains a deeply talented artist, witness his Oscar-nominated performance in 2006’s “Dreamgirls.” He can sing. He can dance. And he still can make us laugh in the right roles.
Now, Murphy has to go out and find them.
He’ll have to shake the image that he’s a problem on the set, and if there’s any way to shake free from his “Beverly Hills Cop IV” commitments, all the better.
But now is the perfect time for Murphy to go back to his roots. Do a stand-up tour. Work with up and coming talents. Remember the fuel that fired your comic ascent.
It’s not too late. Audiences want to laugh along with you again. Just like old times.

Bowfinger is still one of his best movies.
While “I Spy” was campy, I enjoyed it a great deal.
I saw “I Spy” on a plane and I was eyeballing the nearest parachute … but yeah, Bowfinger really showcased him well!
