Fighting back against angry geeks

One movie critic is trying to battle back against Internet thugs who spew vile comments toward anyone who dares to criticize geek-friendly films.

Movie Mom – AKA Nell Minow – got blasted for daring to point out the flaws in “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.”

The comments left about her review at RottenTomatoes.com are beyond gross. Rather than ignore them, Minow defended her geek bona fides and dared the commentators to take on her criticisms rather than simply slime her.

WWTW doubts these posters will change their ways based on her reasoned riposte, but if only one of them thinks twice about their knee-jerk hate Minow’s efforts haven’t gone to waste.

How much hate mail do you get in a week? I recently got a bunch of letters regarding my butchering of Wolverine that apparently came from a half a class of local high school kids upset with what I had to say. I must be getting old because seeing some of the language employed offended my good sensibilities on so many levels. Not to mention that if one of those geeks talked to me like that in person, I’d drag them into a bathroom stall and shove their head in the toilet.

The hate mail comes in sporadically, and it’s all email/comment based so it’s easy to discard. My middling review of “Drag Me to Hell” brought out the goons, but “Wall*E” drew withering responses from more eloquent folks.

I just hate when they name call or refuse to confront my points. Let’s debate …

And hey, if you’re geek and refuse to accept a critic hating your favorite movies, don’t read any reviews. Or get a thicker skin.

I suppose people take it as an insult to their taste and thus to them.

My favorite is the ALL CAPS EMAIL with lots of gay slurs that frequently insists that they could care less what I have to say and to not bother and write them back. Though we’re on other sides of the fence, I love that scene in Kevin Smith’s “Jay and Silent Bob” where the duo visits everyone that wrote nasty things about them online and stomps them into the dirt.
