Some movie release timing seems more than fortuitous.
Take “The Stoning of Soraya M.,” the harrowing true story of an Iranian woman executed for the crime of adultery based on barbaric Sharia Law statutes.
The film hits selected cities today (June 26) just as tensions between the Iranian people and their Mullah-ocracy is reaching a fever pitch.
WWTW spoke to “Stoning” director Cyrus Nowrasteh over at Big Hollywood and reviewed the film for PajamasMedia.com.

I got into a debate with some other commenters at Big Hollywood over this topic. It does seem like a happy accident that the movie was released at the same time as the election controversy, and I hope that gives it an attention boost.
Nevertheless, the release date was picked out months ago, and there’s no way the filmmakers could have known that this controversy would be in the news when the movie was released. So it makes me wonder why they didn’t choose to release it in the fall instead. It would have a better shot at getting some awards, and at luring the fall “art-house crowd”, as opposed to this weekend, when I fear it will be completely swallowed up at the box office by its competition.
How many adults that want to see this movie will take their kids to Transformers 2 instead? Quite a few, I think.
It’s a good point … but indie studios try to counterprogram during the summer. It’s a risky strategy …. Once was a huge summer hit by indie standards, as was Little Miss Sunshine. But I bet you could list dozens of recent indie films released in the summer which got bowled over by the blockbusters.
