Worst movie dates ever?

Worst movie dates ever?

July 5, 2009

As omens go, this one came with a blinking neon light.

WWTW’s first date with a single mom years ago took place – where else? – at the movies.

But this intrepid critic wasn’t reviewing movies back then and, more importantly, hadn’t done his homework regarding the films showing at the local movie house.

So I took his date to see “Happiness.”

Pedophilia. Murder. You name it, “Happiness” had it – in droves.

That story came to mind this weekend when I met a friend who said she once went on a date with a guy to watch a DVD from his film collection.

He plucked “Deliverance” from the pile, telling her it was a story “about Appalachia.”

Needlenss to say she went on to marry someone else.

Any horrible movie date stories you can share with WWTW readers?

As you know, Christian, I brought a date with to see the press screening of “Public Enemies”. She walked out half-way through “it’s too violent, sorry.” I had to stay since I was on the hook to write a review of the film. She was pretty cool about it, but ironically had no purse either so couldn’t even get a cup of coffee while she waited almost an hour for me to get out of the theater. :-)

i actually saw happiness with my wife who at the time was my girlfriend and we had been dating several months so i was safe in that dept. very disturbing film. chances are that you should not go see a Todd Solodonz film on a first date. i don’t really have a bad first date movie per say the first movie that i saw with my wife was ‘the sixth sense’ which we both liked. i waited a bit to show her my dvd collection because it was filled with obscure horror titles that probably would have driven any woman away i’m sure.

I would say “Revolutionary Road”, since it starred Kate and Leo and most people walked into it probably thinking it would be like “Titanic” meets “Mad Men”. It was anything but.

When I was in college, I took a young lady to see “Tommy”. She was and probably still is clean and arrow straight. What a disaster.

An boyfriend once took me to see Hanging Up, which was about caring for a dying parent and fighting with siblings while doing so, chock full of jokes as funny as root canals. It wasn’t the main reason I broke up with him–he was the sort of guy who’d brush his teeth each morning with vodka–but it was definitely a contributing factor.

I dated this girl on and off in high school and after wards. She loved the movie Basic Instinct and we went on our Friday night date. She kept calling it Basic Instincts too. Annoying. She would laugh really loud at inappropriate times and snicker during the sex scenes. Even more annoying. Everything was so exciting to her that she couldn’t keep it to herself.

She would always have this inescapable grin when we talked about the movie later and I think that lasted for days each time. I was right when I thought that movie put all sorts of bad ideas in her head when I found an icepick in her nightstand. Just for kicks and to see if I would find it. I told her mom and she made an appointment with a shrink for her daughter. I think I should’ve seen the doc for even dating her on and off for the next five years. I ended up buying the the director’s cut later on VHS for my movie collection.

I’ve repeated this ad nausem, but “The Other Sister” with Juliette Lewis, Diane Keaton, Tom Skerrit and Giovani Ribisi (sp). Lifetime disaster with a big budget. Oh the Republican rich family deals with a mentally ill daughter. Oh, she embarrasses them. Oh, she has sex with Ribisi, who announces it a dinner. Oh, the other daughter is gay. It was like the cast of “The View” wrote a screenplay in between commercial breaks.

My freshman year in college I took a girl I had a big crush on to “Black Rain.” It, uh… didn’t work out.

I was home from college one Christmas and met the very hot girl at a party. She must have had way too much to drink, as she agreed to go to a movie with me the following evening. My choice: Ragging Bull. Girl gone…

Still love that movie!!

Jean-Luc Godard’s “King Lear” with Burgess Meredith as Lear and Molly Ringwald as Cordelia. She hasn’t spoken to me since.

My old boyfriend took me to see “Apocolypse Now” … as revenge, I made him take me to “All That Jazz”. We are now even.
