I’ve repeated this ad nausem, but “The Other Sister” with Juliette Lewis, Diane Keaton, Tom Skerrit and Giovani Ribisi (sp). Lifetime disaster with a big budget. Oh the Republican rich family deals with a mentally ill daughter. Oh, she embarrasses them. Oh, she has sex with Ribisi, who announces it a dinner. Oh, the other daughter is gay. It was like the cast of “The View” wrote a screenplay in between commercial breaks.

I dated this girl on and off in high school and after wards. She loved the movie Basic Instinct and we went on our Friday night date. She kept calling it Basic Instincts too. Annoying. She would laugh really loud at inappropriate times and snicker during the sex scenes. Even more annoying. Everything was so exciting to her that she couldn’t keep it to herself.

She would always have this inescapable grin when we talked about the movie later and I think that lasted for days each time. I was right when I thought that movie put all sorts of bad ideas in her head when I found an icepick in her nightstand. Just for kicks and to see if I would find it. I told her mom and she made an appointment with a shrink for her daughter. I think I should’ve seen the doc for even dating her on and off for the next five years. I ended up buying the the director’s cut later on VHS for my movie collection.

An boyfriend once took me to see Hanging Up, which was about caring for a dying parent and fighting with siblings while doing so, chock full of jokes as funny as root canals. It wasn’t the main reason I broke up with him–he was the sort of guy who’d brush his teeth each morning with vodka–but it was definitely a contributing factor.
