I never saw Meg Ryan as a sweetheart, maybe she made my claws come out, gack. My husband adored her until she had that torrid affair with Crowe, and he noticed was starting to show her age in French Kiss. I think her problem was that she played the exact same ingenue character in every RomCom. I agree on K Heigl being a good candidate for our next sweetheart, she seems really genuine, and she makes it look effortless. I think she needs to ensure that the scripts she picks have some variety to them.
If Katherine Heigl wants to be a “sweetheart,” R-rated comedies are NOT the way to go. Like Sandra Bullock, she can do hard-edged dramatic work on the side—-(that is, if, like Sandra Bullock, she is talented enough to do it)—but rom-com is a different story. The good scripts there operate within certain limits that are absolutely necessary for developing tension and chemistry. The mood matters, and as a general rule, anything R-rated breaks the spell.
