Movie cliches don’t have to be old to be moldy.
Lately, we’ve seen more than a few films featuring U.S. soldiers returning from Iraq or Afghanistan who can’t handle re-entry into society – or simply go ballistic soon thereafter.
Think “Home of the Brave,” “Stop Loss” and “The Lucky Ones” for the latest examples.
Will “Brothers” serve up the same ol’ story?
The film, hitting theaters Dec. 4, 2009, stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a ne’ever do well who helps out his brother’s family when said brother is killed in battle. But the brother in question (Tobey Maguire) isn’t really dead, and he appears to lose control after returning home – according to the film’s trailer.
“Brothers” is a remake of a Danish film from 2005, and the back story behind the missing brother in that production provides the kind of detail that might assuage those who see the remake as another anti-war tirade.
Good talent abounds in the new “Brothers,” which co-stars Natalie Portman. Let’s hope they breathe new life into a potentially stale storyline.

Let’s hope so.
Tobey Maguire and Jake Gyllenhaal in the same movie? Is this “Metrosexuals on Ice?”
when’s the last time there’s been an image from a movie like Tex Cobb carrying a wounded soldier in Uncommon Valor? Why can’t HW make a movie about soldier playing good guys who fight bad guys? Real bad guys not aliens and robots.
